NORAD, headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is the bi-national command that provides warning and assessment of aerospace attack against the North American continent, and it assists in safeguarding the sovereignty of its airspace.

The United States and Canada agreed to extend the North American Aerospace
Defense Command (NORAD) Agreement for five years, effective May 12. The
agreement was signed at the Department of State in Washington by Secretary of State
Warren Christopher and Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy.
NORAD is the bi-national command headquarterd in Colorado Springs that provides warning and assessment of aerospace attack against the North American continent. NORAD also assists each country in safeguarding the sovereignty of its airspace. NORAD was created in 1958 and, through successive renewals of the NORAD agreement, has continued to fulfill its early warning and aerospace defense missions in protection of North America.
The NORAD Agreement was renewed after a thorough policy review in both countries highlighted the continued benefits of a cooperative approach in aerospace defense, and the need to refocus NORAD's mission with the end of the Cold War.
