Accounting Manager

The Opportunity

The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) is currently in search of a dynamic and detail-oriented Accounting Manager to join our esteemed finance team. In this role, the chosen candidate will play a crucial part in the processes of accounting, budget preparation, subcontracting, and subgranting.

As an Accounting Manager, you will work closely and collaboratively with program staff, fostering effective communication and cooperation to ensure a seamless flow of information. Your primary responsibilities will be twofold: 1) provide support for accounts payable, ensuring that all payments are processed efficiently and accurately, in accordance with the organization’s policies and guidelines. 2) provide accounting support for credit card reconciliations and collecting related documentation.

Your role involves not only a keen attention to detail but also the ability to adhere to deadlines, ensuring that financial processes are executed in a timely manner. By maintaining open lines of communication with program staff, you will facilitate a smooth exchange of information, enabling the finance team to meet its objectives effectively.

What you’ll do (Core responsibilities)

  • Process and verify invoices, ensuring accuracy and compliance with FAS’s policies and vendor agreements, while ensuring timely payment of all accounts payable.
  • Address any discrepancies or issues with vendors and employees, maintaining effective communication to resolve concerns promptly.
  • Maintain and update vendor records, including payment terms, contact information, and other relevant details to ensure accuracy.
  • Assist with month-end closing processes by performing account analysis, providing necessary reports, and supporting financial reconciliation.
  • Reconcile credit card statements and supporting documents, ensuring consistency and accuracy in financial records.
  • Assist with the annual and single audits by providing necessary documentation, supporting schedules, and responding to audit inquiries.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the accounts payable function and overall financial operations.

Skills and Experience (Requirements)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field;
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to organize paperwork in a methodical manner;
  • Discreet, detail-oriented, client-focused, patient, and receptive to acquiring new skills;
  • Excellent communication skills, and 
  • 3+ relevant years of experience.

Preferred qualifications

  • Prior work experience from non-profit or government institutions/organizations;
  • Familiarity with the 2 CFR 200 uniform guidelines is a valuable asset for this role;
  • Experience with accounting software (e.g., Sage, or similar platforms) and familiarity with accounting principles specific to non-profit organizations, including fund accounting.

Work Environment 

This position will be a hybrid role based in Washington DC, meaning that both remote and in-person work can be accommodated, generally two to three days per week in the DC office, and two to three days per week remote. This position is included in a union-represented collective bargaining unit, and specific terms and conditions of employment are subject to collective bargaining.

Salary Range

  • $70,000 – $87,500
