EXERCISE TESTS COMMAND'S EVACUATION PROCEDURES
SEOUL (USFK) March 25, 1999 -- U.S. Forces Korea will conduct Courageous Channel 99-1, a semi-annual noncombatant evacuation operations (NEO) exercise, March 25-28. This exercise will test the commands NEO plans and procedures for an ordered evacuation from the Republic of Korea (ROK).
During the exercise, approximately 120 volunteer noncombatants from throughout the ROK will also participate in a limited evacuation. Volunteers will assemble throughout the peninsula and move to Osan AB March 26 where they will depart on a military aircraft to an exercise safe haven in Japan. The noncombatants will return March 28. This part of the exercise will allow the command to perform the full range of tasks it would execute during an actual short-notice ordered evacuation.
All DOD-affiliated noncombatants to include non-emergency essential U.S. Government employees will participate in the Courageous Channel exercise. The participants will process through the Evacuation Control Centers (ECC) to verify the completeness and accuracy of NEO packets and to become familiar with processing procedures.
CC 99-1 will also exercise the NEO Tracking System (NTS). The purpose of exercising the NTS is to demonstrate performance improvements in the system's ability to track noncombatants as they move through the evacuation process from Korea to the repatriation sites in the continental United States.
This is a joint training exercise that will involve the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps personnel.
