Melanie Klein is a Senior Associate for Federal Data Policy at the Federation of American Scientists and a contributor on two projects working to build a more resilient federal data infrastructure. At dataindex.us, she monitors the status of federal data, and at EssentialData.US, she tells stories of how federal datasets benefit American lives and livelihoods. Her focus is on the intersection of data, policy, and governance, and she has previously worked on data policy at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Melanie graduated from American University with a B.S. in Data Sciences for Justice, Law, and Criminology, and minors in Computer Science and Political Science. She was also a Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College on the Data Analytics track.
