Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies Policy Associate
The Opportunity
The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) seeks a Policy Associate to support the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Emerging Technologies initiative under the guidance of the AI Policy Specialist. The ideal candidate should have an entrepreneurial mindset to continue the advancement of AI and emerging technologies in the policy domain and should have knowledge on the principles and policies relating to AI.
The Policy Associate will be responsible for, but not limited to, researching AI policy, communicating frequently with stakeholders, and project management. This role invites those who desire to not only shape, but also learn in the constantly evolving landscape of AI policy and emerging technologies.
While technical proficiency is advantageous, this role highlights the importance of comprehension, strategic thinking, collaboration, and adaptability in addressing challenges concerning national security, societal equity, and the vast landscape affected by AI technologies.
What You’ll Be Doing (Core Responsibilities)
- Support the AI policy development under the guidance of the AI Policy Specialist;
- Assist in providing technical advice on AI and emerging technologies legislative initiatives;
- Maintain current knowledge on global AI trends to effectively drive policy recommendations;
- Manage both internal and external communications in regards to AI policies and other pertinent emerging technologies;
- Work collaboratively with the broader FAS team in integrating and informing AI policy efforts into their work and agendas;
- Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned based on the needs of the organization.
Skills and Experience (Requirements)
- Bachelor’s or equivalent in machine learning, computer science, policy studies, or a related field. Preference will be given to a candidate with a Master’s Degree, but it is not required. 1-3 years of relevant experience in AI policy, technology, analysis, or implementation is a plus;
- Basic knowledge of AI principles and their applications;
- Strong communication skills with experience communicating complex information to a diverse audience;
- Ability to think strategically, analytically, and solve problems creatively;
- Coordinate the drafting and approving of policy documents, reports, and other briefings;
- Experience in stakeholder engagement or policy development is preferred;
- A desire to explore and learn about the dynamic field of AI policy.
Work Environment
This position will be a hybrid role. Meaning that both remote and in-person work can be accommodated, generally two to three days per week on-site, and two to three days per week remote depending on the needs of the organization.
Salary Range
$60,000 – $70,000
