Senior Advisor on Justice40 Impact Fellow

Washington D.C. – Full-Time, Remote – based in Washington, D.C.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Department of Energy is seeking a fellow for a 1-year term (with potential opportunity to extend) to join the Office of Energy Justice Policy and Analysis, within the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity. The Fellow will coordinate, and support implementation of policies related to the Justice40 Initiative that addresses current and historic energy and environmental injustices.

Current federal employees are not eligible for this position.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Coordinating, tracking, supporting, and overseeing intra- and interagency Justice40 policy and program implementation efforts to address needs and gaps related to: current and historic environmental injustices; the disproportionate impacts of pollution on marginalized, underserved, and overburdened communities; and the need to provide these same communities with greater input on federal policies and decisions;  
  • Acting as a liaison with Executive Office of the President (EOP), Tribal, State, and local governmental representatives, and Congressional offices on environmental justice issues as they relate to the Justice40 Initiative;
  • Coordinating working groups, conversations, or opportunities related to the Justice40 Initiative;
  • Assisting with public engagement and outreach efforts, including around capacity-building and technical support, to environmental justice leaders and marginalized communities to advance equitable implementation of the Justice40 Initiative; 
  • Preparing Congressional testimony, assisting in responding to Congressional requests, and analyzing proposed legislation on issues relevant to the Justice40 Initiative; and
  • Advising the Deputy Director for Energy Justice, Director of the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity, and other senior officials on issues related to the Justice40 Initiative. This includes planning and initiating programs and developing guidance documents, EOP and Congressional reports, and other significant materials.
  • Conceiving, planning, and coordinating policy initiatives of national significance in the areas of environmental justice in order to aid high-level policy makers in interpreting and analyzing policy problems that focus on improving governmental operation and management of federal energy and environmental programs and policies.
  • Promoting and advancing the Department’s and the Administration’s message on energy and environmental policy as it relates to the Justice40 Initiative, including liaising with internal and external officials on progress of the initiative.

YOUR BACKGROUND AND ABILITIES

  • Experience in interpreting and implementing federal programs and laws related the environment, public health, and environmental justice;
  • Ability to organize and coordinate policy development related to energy and environmental justice and advise the Deputy Director for Energy Justice, Director of the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity, and others on all such activities;
  • Ability to assume a leadership position in dealing with representatives of Department offices, other federal agencies, Congress, State, local, and Tribal governments, and members of the public on behalf of the Office of Energy Justice Policy and Analysis; and
  • Ability to perform a wide range of assignments, with limited assistance and supervision, in a wide-ranging, fast-moving environment.
  • Ability to work independently and assume responsibility for planning, coordinating, and carrying out technically accurate projects and informing the Deputy Director of progress as appropriate. 
  • Ability to use judgment and ingenuity to modify, develop, and interpret policy guidelines.
  • Ability to evaluate and interpret policies, projects, and studies, and develop a range of alternatives for the solutions of policy problems. 

EDUCATION & OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Unfortunately, FAS is unable to consider current federal employees for the FAS Impact Fellowship.

STIPEND

This fellowship will provide a stipend for the entirety of the fellowship duration at an annual rate of $155,700 per year. The Impact Fellow will receive an additional stipend of $20,600 to account for health expenses, as well as a $4,000 relocation stipend.
