American spy satellite photographs appeared to indicate the presence of a chemical weapons plant at Aleppo in northern Syria.

Special Report - Syria has carried out a reorganization of its surface-to-surface missile units since 1982. At the end of 1988 the Syrians had more than 36 launching systems for SS-21 missiles, 24 launchers for FROG 7, and 18 launchers for SCUD-B.
- Syria's Missile Strategy Almashad Alsiasi 22 October 1996 - At the end of 1988 the Syrians had more than 36 launching systems for SS-21 missiles, 24 launchers for FROG 7, 18 launchers for SCUD-B, and launchers for the SS18 and SSC-3 missiles which are designed for coastal defense. The Syrian surface-to-surface missile forces are organized in three surface-to-surface missile brigades and one brigade which is in the process of being formed.

- Syrian Weaponry August 8, 1996.. 23 Av 5756 Special Report - 021sr Missile inventories include 36 SS-21 missiles, 200 SS-1 (Scud-B) missiles and 60 Scud-C. These missiles are manufactured in underground plants near Halab and Hamah. Chemical weapons are manufactured in three locations. One is next to Damascus, the second next to Hamah and the third, the main plant, in the village of Safira, in the region of Halab.
