Washington -- The White House dismissed a reported Iraqi peace announcement February 25, asserting the Persian Gulf war will continue.
White House Press Secretary Marlin Fitzwater said there has been "no authoritative contact" between Iraq and members of the allied coalition now ejecting Iraq's invasion force from Kuwait. He was asked about a broadcast by Radio Baghdad which claimed Saddam Hussein had ordered withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait.
"There's nothing to respond to," Fitzwater said in reference to the Radio Baghdad broadcast. "The war goes on."
According to news reports, the Baghdad broadcast said "orders have been issued" directing the "organized withdrawal" of Iraqi forces to positions occupied by Iraq on August 1,1990, the day before its troops invaded Kuwait.
When President Bush set a deadline of 1700 GMT February 23 for Iraq's agreement to accept unconditional withdrawal, he called on Baghdad to inform the United Nations Security Council in "authoritative" terms, that it accepted the 12 U.N. resolutions condemning Iraq's behavior. NNNN
