*EPF406 01/23/92 U.S. CALLS MEETING WITH DPRK REPS "USEFUL AND CONSTRUCTIVE" (Text: Statement on U.S.-DPRK meeting) (240) Washington -- The January 22 meeting between U.S. and North Korean officials was a "useful and constructive step," according to the State Department.
A statement released following the meeting stressed, however, that progress toward more normal relations between the two countries would depend on how Pyongyang resolved the nuclear issue and the North-South dialogue.
Following is the text of the statement: (begin text) Today a U.S. delegation headed by Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Arnold Kanter met with a delegation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea led by Korean Workers' Party Secretary for International Affairs Kim Young Sun.
As usual with allies and friends, we have been in close contact with the Republic of Korea about the meeting today.
At this meeting we discussed our concerns regarding the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula, explained how those concerns might be satisfactorily resolved, and exchanged views on the potential for improvement in relations between our two countries.
We also stressed the importance of North-South dialogue and raised other issues of concern.
Both sides expressed their views in a cordial and frank way that led to an improved understanding of each other's position. Although progress toward more normal relations will depend on the resolution of our concerns, this meeting was a useful and constructive step.
