Jeff Tsao is a Senior Scientist in the Material, Physical and Chemical Sciences Center 1800 at Sandia National Laboratories. He has a BS in mathematics, and an MS in electrical engineering, both from Stanford University; and a PhD in applied physics from Harvard University. During the years 1981-2013, he was a researcher and line/program manager in physical sciences and engineering, with associations with MIT-Lincoln Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, E2O Communications, the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering in Singapore, and the Department of Energy’s Office of Science and Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Since 2013, Jeff has been exploring “metaresearch” and “applied metaresearch”—understanding the nature of research and applying that understanding to the nurture of research. He is co-author, with Venky Narayanamurti (founding Dean of Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences), of “The Genesis of Technoscientific Revolutions: Rethinking the Nature and Nurture of Research”> (Harvard University Press, 2021).
