GENERAL:

The AN/ARC-199 radio set is the airborne portion of a ground and airborne communications system used to transmit and receive voice and data between stations that are beyond the range of line-of-sight communications. The AN/ARC-199 HF radio is the Army's interim HF radio set to be used until the AN/ARC-220 is fielded. Use of the AN/ARC-199 is on a special mission application basis.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:

The AN/ARC-199 system consists of four line replaceable units which are: receiver transmitter, control display unit, amplifier-coupler and antenna coupler. The radio set is a high-frequency, single-side band radio with selectable output power levels of 4, 40 and 170 watts peak electrical power, and operates from a nominal 27.5 volts direct current power supply. The frequency of operation is from 2.0 to 29.9999 megahertz (MHz). Transmit and receive frequencies are programmable in 100 Hz increments on 21 presettable channels, for a total of 280,000 possible frequencies. The AN/ARC-199 radio may be operated as a stand-alone system or from a MIL-STD-1553 data bus. Emission modes include the upper side band, lower side band, double side band, amplitude modulation equivalent and modulated carrier wave modes. Its built-in test capability includes continuous monitoring of important operating conditions. The radio is operable at all times in a half-duplex, push-to-talk mode. Syllabic squelch is controlled from the display panel, and is adjustable from off through eight levels to maximum. Selective squelch or selective address (SELADR) is provided to eliminate the reception of unwanted radio frequency signals. When the SELADR feature is operational, the receiver is automatically squelched until the pre-programmed SELADR code is detected. The squelch is then automatically set to its minimum level, and an audio tone is generated which notifies the operator of an incoming call. The total system weight is 31.05 pounds.

GENERAL:

The AN/ARC-220 and AN/VRC-100 are HF radios that will provide secure and non-secure voice and data communications with automatic link establishment (ALE) and will operate in the 2.0-29.999 Megahertz (MHz) frequency band in frequency steps of 100 Hertz (Hz). The system will provide communications between Army aircraft flying nap-of-the-earth (NOE) profiles, other Army aircraft, and ground radios. The radio system will provide Army aircraft with the capability for continuous and reliable, secure and non-secure communications at non-line-of-sight (NLOS) distances. The radios will be form-and-fit interchangeable with the AN/ARC-199 HF radio and will incorporate the latest state-of-the-art breakthroughs to include ALE and electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM). The ground configuration of the HF radio is designated as the AN/VRC-100(V)1.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:

The AN/ARC-220(V)1 is the non-1553 data bus version of the system and will include a HF single side band (HF-SSB) receiver-transmitter (RT) (RT-1749/URC), power amplifier/coupler (AM-7531/URC) and control display unit (CDU) (C-12436/URC). The AN/ARC-220(V)2 is the 1553 data bus version and will only use the RT and power/amplifier coupler. The AN/VRC-100(V)1 configuration is a non-1553 data bus ground version of the system and will consist of a RT, power amplifier/coupler, and a CDU enclosed in a metal housing with a speaker and a combined audio/power supply assembly. This radio system weighs approximately 37.0 pounds.

SPECIAL TEST EQUIPMENT:

None. However, the AN/VRC-100(V)1 will be used for testing at the AVIM to fault isolate to the defective shop replaceable unit (SRU) through the use of a built-in-test (BIT) function.


MD-1295/A IMPROVED DATA MODEM (IDM)

GENERAL:

The IDM is a multi-service communications modem that performs message processing and routing functions utilizing four half-duplex channels. The IDM interfaces with a platform's mission computer and the on-board radios. The system is capable of supporting analog, digital, and digital secure communications. For over-the-air (OTA) message interoperability, the IDM processes Tactical Fire Direction System (TACFIRE), Air Force Applications Program Development (AFAPD), and MIL-STD-188-220 protocols; and supports TACFIRE, AFAPD, and Joint Variable Message Format (JVMF) messages. The IDM is in Full Rate Production (FRP) with over 2,000 units under contract for the multi-services. The U.S. Army has initiated a Preplanned Product Improvement (P3I) to incorporate the Embedded Battle Command software for processing JVMF messages.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:

The hardware system consists of three advanced microprocessor modules (a Generic Interface Processor and two Digital Signal Processors), a power module, and a rigid/flex backplane assembly. Each Digital Signal Processor is supported by a TMS320C30 processor which modulates/demodulates signals for two half-duplex channels. The Generic Interface Processor is supported by an INTEL 80960MC RISC processor, which performs MIL-STD-1553 interface processing. All modules are designed for the Standard Electronic Module-Format E (SEM-E) form factor. The chassis is capable of holding seven modules. The U.S. Army is investigating the incorporation of a Video Imagery Module (VIM) as the material solution to requirements for imagery transfer. The system dimensions are 9.00 X 7.42 X 5.35 inches and weighs approximately 15 pounds.

IMPROVED FREQUENCY MODULATED (IFM) AMPLIFIER

GENERAL:

The Improved Frequency Modulated (IFM) Amplifier is required for Nap-of-the-Earth (NOE) communications. It provides increased radio frequency power output and can be initiated by a selector switch on the control panel. The IFM amplifier operates in conjunction with the AN/ARC-201A(V) Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS). It is designed to couple received signals from the antenna to the receiver/transmitter (RT). The IFM is controlled by a three setting switch (high, normal and low) either on the radio RT unit or the multi-function display unit on the data bus unit.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:

The IFM amplifier operates at 30 to 87.975 megahertz with a 50 ohm impedance. Primary power for the IFM is 28 volts direct current. The total system weight is 10.5 pounds.
