General Assembly calls for more work on comprehensive anti-terrorism treaty
12 December – The General Assembly today endorsed the continuation of talks aimed at elaborating a comprehensive convention against international terrorism as well as a treaty geared towards suppressing acts of nuclear terrorism.

Acting on the recommendation of its Legal (Sixth) Committee, the Assembly adopted a resolution deciding that the ad hoc committee working to draft the two conventions should meet next year from 12 to 23 February and from 15 to 26 October. During those sessions, the committee will also consider the question of convening a high-level conference under UN auspices to formulate an organized international response to all forms of terrorism.

By other terms of the resolution, the Assembly strongly condemned persistent worldwide acts of terrorism as criminal and unjustifiable, irrespective of where they were committed and by whom. The Assembly also reiterated its call on all States to adopt further measures to prevent terrorism and to strengthen international efforts to combat it. All States were also called upon to refrain from financing, encouraging, training or supporting terrorist activities.

That resolution was one of a series of texts passed by the Assembly today concerning legal issues. The measures included a resolution condemning acts of violence against diplomatic and consular missions and representatives, as well as a text calling on the United States, as the UN's host country, to consider removing the travel restrictions it has imposed on certain missions and UN staff of certain nationalities.
