TEXT: FBI SENDING SPECIAL AGENTS TO INVESTIGATE EMBASSY BOMBINGS

Washington -- The Federal Bureau of Investigation dispatched Special
Agents from both the United States and from overseas posts August 7 to
conduct a criminal investigation of the bombing attacks on US
embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.


Teams of FBI explosive experts will be involved in the forensic
examination of the crime scenes as well as Evidence Response Teams,
who will be responsible for collecting and preparing crime scene
evidence, according to a statement released by the FBI National Press
Office August 7.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said today it is dispatching
Special Agents and other personnel to investigate the bombing attacks
against the United States embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es
Salaam, Tanzania.


Within hours of the bombings, FBI personnel were dispatched from both
the United States and from overseas where FBI Special Agents were
carrying out other assignments, including Agents assigned as Legal
Attaches on the African continent.


In addition to those Special Agents who will conduct this criminal
investigation, there will be teams of FBI explosive experts who will
be involved in the forensic examination of the crime scenes as well as
Evidence Response Teams who will be responsible for collecting and
preparing crime scene evidence.


Under anti-terrorism statutes created by Congress, the FBI has
jurisdiction to investigate attacks on American citizens and interests
overseas in an effort to change or influence United States government
policy. The laws cover homicide, attempted homicide, conspiracy, and
other crimes directed at U.S. citizens.
