CLINTON WILL CONFER WITH BRAZIL'S PRESIDENT

President Clinton will confer April 20 with Brazilian President Fernando

Henrique Cardoso, who will pay a state visit to Washington.



The White House said the two leaders will continue the dialogue begun at the

Summit of the Americas on trade, investment, sustainable development and

strengthening democracy.  The visit, the White House added, will expand the

"already close ties between the United States and Brazil, the two largest

democracies and the two largest economies in the Western Hemisphere."



STUDEMAN NAMED CIA ACTING DIRECTOR

President Clinton has named the deputy director of central intelligence,

Admiral William Studeman, to serve as acting director, effective January

10.  James Woolsey, the director of central intelligence, announced his

decision to resign last month, and his successor has not yet been chosen.

Studeman has been deputy director since April 1992.  He is a former

director of the National Security Agency and of the Naval Intelligence

Service.
