KRAVCHUK VISIT SET

Ukraine's President Leonid Kravchuk will visit Washington March 3-5 and meet

with President Clinton on March 4; the visit was announced during Clinton's

trip to Kiev last month.



The White House said the leaders will discuss implementation of the

trilateral statement on removal of nuclear weapons from Ukraine, ways to

promote economic reform in Kiev and security issues.



AMBASSADOR SELECTED

The president will nominate Derek Shearer, a former Commerce Department

official, to be ambassador to Finland.  Shearer is an associate professor

of public policy at California's Occidental College where he also is

director of the International and Public Affairs Center.



DEFENSE POST FILLED

1linton will nominate John Deutch, a military technology expert, to be

deputy secretary of defense.  A former chairman of the chemistry department

at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Deutch is serving as

undersecretary of defense for acquisition and technology.



He previously had been director of energy research in the Department of

Energy, and has served on the White House Science Council, the President's

Nuclear Safety Oversight Committee and the President's Foreign Intelligence

Advisory Board.
