JUSTICE DEPT. REBUTS TIME MAGAZINE'S PAN AM 103 ARTICLE
(Text: Excerpts of Mueller's letter to editor) (220)
Washington -- The May 25 issue of Time Magazine carried excerpts of
Assistant Attorney General Robert Mueller's letter to the editor about the
magazine's recent cover story on Pan Am 103. Following is the text of
those excerpts as they appeared in Time:

(BEGIN EXCERPTS)
"In the untold story of Pan Am 103 (Cover Stories, April 27), Time concocts
a bizarre theory that the pending federal indictment of two Libyan
intelligence officials is a ploy to reward Syria rather than a legitimate
charge based on evidence that will stand up in court. Your story impugns
the integrity of a legion of dedicated law enforcement officials who have
painstakingly pursued this investigation on both sides of the Atlantic.

"Time's assertion that the Justice Department deliberately overlooked
important evidence is false. Our investigation continues. We follow the
facts wherever they lead. If others are found to have been involved they
also will be indicted -- no matter who they are or to whom they owe
allegiance.

(Signed) Robert S. Mueller III
Assistant Attorney General
U.S. Department of Justice
Washington."
