1997 Factbook on Intelligence

Forward to 50th Anniversary Edition

"Fifty Years of Silent Service"

This Special Edition of the Factbook on Intelligence celebrates the establishment of the Central Intelligence Agency on September 18, 1947. As the preeminent provider of strategic intelligence to the President and the National Security Team for fifty years, Agency personnel played key roles in fighting and winning the long Cold War. Today our officers are better educated and equipped than ever to meet the many fast-moving intelligence challenges in an ever-changing global community. Our ultimate hope is that the unique capabilities of the Central Intelligence Agency and the Intelligence Community will result in a world of peace and prosperity for people everywhere. Thank you for your interest in CIA as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary.

Sincerely,

George J. Tenet
Director of Central Intelligence
