No. 104-98
PRESS ADVISORY April 30, 1998

The Department of Defense and the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization's National Missile Defense (NMD) Joint Program Office will announce today the award of a contract for the NMD Lead System Integrator. A news conference by Lt. Gen. Lester L. Lyles is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the Pentagon Briefing Room, Room 2E781.

The LSI will be responsible for designing, developing, testing and integrating a variety of components for a limited NMD system to protect the United States from a potential ballistic missile attack in the future. If it is determined a threat exists, a limited system could be deployed by 2003. If deployed, this system will consist of ground-based interceptor missiles, space-based satellites for missile-launch detection and interceptor guidance, and a battle management, command, control and communication system.

Two firms have offered proposals for consideration: Boeing North American, and the United Missile Defense Co., a joint venture between Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and TRW.
