Ballistic Missile Defense Program Complete Successful Test Flights.
By NAVSEA Public Affairs
WHITE SANDS, New Mexico-- With two successful test flights in a week, the
U.S. Navy is moving closer to providing Area Theater Ballistic Missile Defense
(TBMD) capability to the Fleet.
The Navy has released a series of photographs from the latest test at the "Desert Ship" site at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
The primary mission of the Navy Area TBMD system will be to defend our troops and to protect coastal airfields and seaports, critical assets, population centers and large geographic regions against tactical ballistic missile attack.
Six more White Sands' test flights are scheduled in the engineering and manufacturing
phase of the program. Upon completion of this test series, technical and operational
evaluations will commence in 2002 at the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF)
in Kauai, Hawaii.
