Tsunamis are a series of enormous waves created by an underwater disturbance such as an earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, or meteorite.

How to Identify a Tsunami

  • The following warnings will be broadcast over the radio and on TV:
    • Advisory: An earthquake has occurred in the Pacific basin, which might generate a tsunami
    • Watch: A tsunami was or may have been generated, but is at least two hours travel time to the area
    • Warning: A tsunami was generated, which could cause damage; people in the warned area are strongly advised to evacuate
If there is noticeable recession in water away from the shoreline you should move inland immediately

How to Respond to a Tsunami

  • Move inland to higher ground immediately
  • Save yourself, not your possessions
  • Stay inland; there may be more than one wave
