Hans Albrecht Bethe, 98, a key scientific leader of the Manhattan Project, died March 7 at his home in Ithaca, New York. Having played a key role in developing atomic weapons in the Manhattan project, Bethe was a tireless champion of efforts to minimize the risks these weapons created. He was instrumental in founding the Federation of Atomic Scientists, now the Federation of American Scientists.
