Amarelo, Monica
Biography
Monica Amarelo is the Director of Communications at the Federation of American Scientists. Prior to FAS, Amarelo supervised the News and Information Office of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In addition to writing bylined articles for the website (www.aaas.org) and stories for the journal Science, she managed the newsroom for the 2001-2004 annual meetings. Each year more than 1,000 working reporters registered to attend and covered about 30 news briefings.
At the National Association of Home Builders, Amarelo generated increased awareness of building systems construction and communicated complex housing issues to various audiences.
She started her career writing brochures, newsletters and speeches for the Portuguese-American Leadership Council (PALCUS). While there, she collaborated with Meredith Vieira, co-host of the TODAY Show, on interviews for the PALCUS newsletter LUSUS.
She is a graduate from the S.I. School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in New York.
