  • Sanctions, Military Strikes and Other Potential Actions Against Iran: Anticipating Impacts on the Global Economy (PDF; November 2012): The escalating confrontation between the United States and Iran over the latter’s nuclear program has triggered much debate about what actions should be taken to ensure that Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon. Yet this debate has focused primarily on the immediate impacts on Iran’s nuclear program and thereby left many questions about broader effects underexplored. FAS assessed the global economic impact on a variety of conflict scenarios, sanctions and other alternative actions against Iran in a study conducted by Mr. Charles Blair, Senior Fellow on State and Non-State Threats, and Mr. Mark Jansson, Special Projects Director.
  • Trimming Nuclear Excess (December 2012): The United States and Russia have significantly reduced their nuclear arsenals since the end of the Cold War. The U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile has declined from more than 19,000 in 1991 to approximately 4,650 today. Russia and the United States currently hold more than 90 percent of the world’s total inventory of nuclear warheads.
