The Shanghai Institute of Nuclear Research (SINR) started organizing and construction in October 1958, and was founded in August 1959. It is engaged in in tomography, testing of solid missile propellants, explosives, and detonation packages for nuclear weapons.

The SINR was affiliated to the No. 2 Machinery Industry Ministry from February 1963, and Shanghai Municipality from April 1973. It was transfered to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in January 1978 with the present name. The Shanghai Institute of Nuclear Research is one of the major research institutions of comprehensive studies on nuclear sciences in China. It is staffed with about 800 employees, among them one CAS Academician, over 240 with high academic ranks, and 370 with intermediate academic ranks.

Early studies at SINR concentrated on the fundamental researches in nuclear physics, radioactive chemistry, radiation chemistry, nuclear electronics, accelerator techniques, radiation protection and detection etc. After several decades, work extended to fundamental and applied researches, including nuclear science, applications and inter-disciplines based on the low energy accelerators, and subsidiary the high-technique research and its industrialization, on the other hand, primarily possesses research programs including Shanghai synchrotron radiation light sources, beam technology, applied synchrotron radiation and related subjects.

SINR consists of the Laboratory of Nuclear Analysis Techniques, the Laboratory of Radiation Chemistry, and various other research divisions and centers. The SINR offers programs leading to master's and doctoral degrees and postdoctoral research activities. The Shanghai Nuclear Society is associated to the SINR.

The Laboratory of Nuclear Analysis Techniques, hosted by both SINR and Institute of High Energy Physics, has opened to the world since 1990. the laboratory sustained by the techniques of accelerator, nuclear radiation detection and automatic control, offers programs in nuclear analysis technique applications and fundamental researches in material, environmental, life and geology sciences.

The Nuclear Physics Division utilizes nuclear physics facilities of both abroad and domestic to study heavy ion reactions, nuclear spectroscopy and nuclear many-body problems.

Studies on techniques and applications of accelerators and manufacturing for markets are carried out in the applied accelerator laboratory. The applied accelerator techniques and products are extensively used in archaeology, irradiation processing, environmental and earth sciences.

The Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) is one of the biggest large science projects between the period of the 9th Five Years Plan and the beginning of 10th FYP. The project will, according to the schedule, start running and open to users in the year 2004. The designed electron beam energy of the storage ring will be 3.5 GeV, the circumference of the ring is about 384m and the area of the facility will reach 33000m2. SSRF will be one of the most advanced synchrotron light sources in the world.

The Shanghai Nuclear Technique Development Corporation Limited, (the previous Shanghai Nuclear Technique Development Corporation) was the first technology development corporation set up by the SINR. A group of science and technology enterprises have come into being one by one from the corporation. The major responsibility of the corporation is to gradually assume management and administration for properties of all the science and technology enterprises in the Institute.
