Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space

Provisions
The prevention of an arms race in outer space [PAROS] initiative is a response to the fact that there is no multilateral agreement banning the deployment of weapons other than weapons of mass destruction in outer space. Confidence-building and transparency measures would be first steps in this field.

Status

Chronology
The ad hoc committee on the prevention of an arms race in outer space (PAROS) came close in 1994 to an agreement on starting negotiations on confidence-building measure. The Conference on Disarmament on 26 March 1998 agreed to establish a special coordinators for prevention of an arms race in outer space.
