THE WHITE HOUSE
PRESS BRIEFING BY MIKE MCCURRY
The Briefing Room
January 13, 1997
Q: Can you foreshadow a chemical weapons comment -- what's Clinton going to do to plug that this week?
MCCURRY: We've had conversations with the Senate about the importance of ratifying the Chemical Weapons Convention. The President has stressed that at several different times publicly in recent weeks. You've heard Secretary-designate Albright suggest that should be a very high priority. I reported to you that Sandy Berger and others, including Mr. Panetta, have been on the Hill meeting with Majority Leader Lott to encourage him to schedule it by the April deadline for ratification and for it to become an initial party to the convention. And the President wants to set forth the case for that in more explicit terms, which he will do so tomorrow, correct?
Well, Mr. Johnson will reliably report to you on what the forum is.
