Kinmen, Jan. 3 (CNA) The Shang Yi Airport on the offshore island of Kinmen was turned over to the Civil Aeronautics Administration by the Republic of China Air Force on Monday, ending more than four decades of military administration of the airport.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Transportation and Communications Minister Lin Fong-cheng said that his ministry will spend NT$850 million (US$26.6 million) over the next three years to improve facilities at the airport.
Meanwhile that day, a new modern control tower built at a cost of NT$90 million (US$2.8 million) also started operations at the airport.
Vice Defense Minister Gen. Wu Shih-wen said the military is happy to transfer the airport to a civilian administration, and is confident that the airport is being transferred into good hands.
He said that the decision to hand over the military airport is in line with the streamlining policy of the armed forces, and added that the military will also consider transferring additional lesser-used military airports to the administration. (By Victor Lai)
