TORPEDO EXPLANATION FOR 'KURSK' CONFIRMED. "Komsomolskaya
pravda" reported on 5 December that it had obtained additional
proof that the "Kursk" submarine sank because of the explosion
of defective torpedoes. The newspaper said that once this
explanation was offered by the independent investigator (see
"RFE/RL Security Watch," 5 December 2000), it had asked
officials to comment. An official investigator then confirmed
that the commander of the "Kursk" had managed to radio Northern
Fleet Command saying that he had on board a defective torpedo
and wanted permission to release via an emergency shot.
