Russian Defense Minister Arrives for One-Day VisitITAR-TASS 23 Dec 96
By Sevindzh Abdulllayeva, Viktor Shulman] BAKU, December 23 (Itar-Tass) - - A meeting between Azeri leaders and Russian Defence Minister Igor Rodionov will be held in Baku today to discuss a number of problems pertaining to further cooperation between Russia and Azerbaijan, said the Russian defence minister who had arrived in Baku on a one- day working visit at the invitation of Azeri President Heydar Aliyev. Rodionov told journalists at Baku airport that "it is necessary to do everything possible so that friendship, good-neighborly relations and mutual assistance strengthen and develop in the interests of the people of the two countries." Rodionov pointed out that many definite agreements in military and technical field had been reached by the two countries, stressing that some details of the mutually advantageous cooperation would be specified at today's talks in Baku. Rodionov said that at forthcoming meetings with Azeri President Heydar Aliyev and Defence Minister Safar Epiyev he would discuss issues connected with further exploitation of the Gabelinskaya radar which has been operating in the centre of Azerbaijan for ten years by now. This is one of the biggest radars in the post-Soviet space serviced by Russian military experts and whose status has not yet been determined since the disintegration of the former Soviet Union. According to Azeri military sources, a protocol on military and technical cooperation between the two countries would be signed upon completion of the meeting in Baku.
