DA Requests Funding To Examine TMD Project

[Text] On 4 August, the Defense Agency [DA] decided to
include an outlay for examining the "theater missile defense"
(TMD) system project in its budget request for FY 1995. The
United States has been asking Japan to participate in the
project. This is the first time that the DA has demanded a
budget outlay for the TMD project. The amount is expected to be
between 2 million-3 million yen and 20 million-30 million yen.
The TMD project is aimed at establishing an air defense
system under which incoming ballistic missiles would be detected
by a satellite and shot down by surface-to-air missiles.
