DATE=11/23/1999 TYPE=CORRESPONDENT REPORT TITLE=IRAN DEATH SENTENCES (S-ONLY) NUMBER=2-256464 BYLINE=SCOTT BOBB DATELINE=CAIRO CONTENT= VOICED AT: INTRO: A senior judge in Iran has confirmed that three of four individuals sentenced to death for inciting student riots last July are to be executed. The fourth student reportedly has been acquitted on grounds of insanity, as we hear from Correspondent Scott Bobb at our Middle East Bureau in Cairo. TEXT: The chief of Iran's Revolutionary Courts, Gholamhossein Rahbarpour, told a gathering of students in Tehran that three of the four death sentences had been confirmed. But he held out the possibility of a pardon, saying if they ask for amnesty their situation could change. The court announced the death sentences IN September, but denied reports by dissidents that those convicted were students. Scores of students were arrested during six-days of rioting last July that erupted after authorities broke up a protest against the banning of a reformist newspaper. It was the worst unrest since the Iranian revolution 20-years ago. (SIGNED) NEB/SB/GE 23-Nov-1999 08:41 AM EDT (23-Nov-1999 1341 UTC) NNNN Source: Voice of America .
