Iraqi Spokesman Warns Iran Over 'Stupid' Acts 11 Jun 1999 Baghdad, 11 Jun (INA -Iraqi News Agency) An official spokesman has announced that the Iranian regime carried out a treacherous act of aggression against Iraq yesterday evening. The spokesman said: At 2046 [1646 GMT] yesterday the Iranian regime fired three long-range surface-to-surface missiles at a Mojahedin-e Khalq [MKO] camp inside Iraqi territory. The spokesman said that this stupid aggressive act reminds us of the stupid and shortsighted acts that were practiced frequently by the Iranian regime 19 years ago, acts that led to war. The spokesman said: At that time--as now--the Tehran rulers deluded themselves, believing, according to mistaken calculations and reckless illusions, that carrying out continuous aggression against Iraq's sovereignty will not meet the appropriate reaction and equal response. As is known, they pushed things to a serious situation. The spokesman said: This cowardly aggression came after a series of terrorist criminal acts committed by the agents of the regime inside Iraq, the last of which was the detonation of a booby-trapped car on Wednesday 9 June, killing a number of Iraqi citizens and six MKO members. The spokesman strongly warned the Iranian regime that committing such aggressive acts is a dangerous escalation of the situation, something that poses a threat to faithful efforts we made to establish good neighborly ties based on mutual respect for sovereignty. The spokesman added: This aggressive act raises serious questions about the position of the UN Security Council [UNSC], which is supposed, in accordance with its resolutions, to be responsible for safeguarding the security of Iraq and its sovereignty. It also sheds light on the suspicious behavior of the UNSC in stripping Iraq of its defense capabilities, which enable it to protect its security and sovereignty against the aggression threatening it. The spokesman said: We are wondering if the UNSC will act according to its responsibilities or will once again deal with its resolutions, which entail specific obligations toward Iraq, as a shoe [kahidha'; term used to infer that the UNSC treats its resolutions with contempt], as has been the case, demonstrated in its shameful behavior toward Iraq in the recent past.
