Secretary-General deplores overnight massacres in Kashmir
2 August -- Reacting to a series of overnight massacres in Kashmir, Secretary-General Kofi Annan today expressed his great dismay and concern over the incidents and urged an end to all terrorist acts.

The Secretary-General "strongly deplores this violence and calls for maximum restraint to prevent any further escalation," a spokesman for Mr. Annan said in a statement released in New York following the massacres in which 93 people, mostly Hindu pilgrims and other civilians, had reportedly been killed. Mr. Annan also reiterated his call "for an end to terrorist attacks wherever they may occur."

"The Secretary-General once again urges India and Pakistan to find an early political solution to the Kashmir problem," the statement said.
