TEXT: PRESS RELEASE ON ALPBACH CONFERENCE ON NATO ENLARGEMENT

Washington -- The New Atlantic Initiative (NAI) has announced the
schedule of discussions on the enlargement of the North Atlantic
Treaty Organization to be held at its conference October 17-19 in
Alpbach, Austria, in association with the European Forum.

NATO CONFERENCE AT ALPBACH



October 17 - 19, 1997



The "New Atlantic Initiative" (NAI), an independent U.S. initiative
dedicated to reinvigorating and expanding the Atlantic community of
democracies, headquartered at the "American Enterprise Institute" and
founded under the auspices of Vaclav Havel, Margaret Thatcher, Helmut
Schmidt, Henry Kissinger, and others, is holding a conference on the
subject of "Enlarging NATO: The Political, Economic, and Cultural
Dimensions" in association with the European Forum Alpbach from
October 17-19, 1997. Director of the NAI is NATO expert Dr. Jeffrey
Gedmin.


The conference, which will be attended by high-ranking NATO experts
and participants from 20 countries and is co-sponsored by the United
States Information Agency, will be opened on October 17 at 8 p.m. in
the presence of Austrian Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister
Schuessel as well as former U.S. National Security Advisor Anthony
Lake. Vice Chancellor Schuessel and Anthony Lake will speak on the
subject of "America, Europe, and the Implications of NATO
Enlargement."
