- Open mike catches Canadian leader's cynicism about Clinton by John F. Harris The Seattle Times Thursday, July 10, 1997 -- Domestic politics, Chretien said, was the reason Clinton was pushing here for consideration of the Baltic states when NATO considers admitting more former Warsaw Pact states in 1999. The reason Clinton cares, according to Chretien,
is because ethnic voting blocks in the United States are pushing their cause.
- Jean Chretien: “They sell their votes…” Princeton Economics’ The World Capital Market Review Issue #7, July 1997 -- Before a recent NATO meeting in Spain, Jean Chretien made some candid comments to Belgian Prime Minister Jean-Luc Dehaene about US politics while unaware that a microphone was picking up their conversation. On NATO, Chretien claimed that the US was motivated primarily by domestic concerns over getting votes and not by reasons of state. “I know the reasons, it’s not the reasons of state. It’s for political reasons, short-term political reasons, to win the next elections… They sell their votes! You want me to vote on NATO, then you have to vote to build me a new bridge in my constituency,” Chretien was caught saying. He also remarked, “Take the quarrel over whether to admit the Baltic States. That has nothing to do with world security. It’s because in Chicago Mayor (Richard) Daley controls lots of votes for the (Democratic) nomination.”
- Chretien Wants Five New NATO Countries 15 Jun 1997 OTTAWA, June 13 - According to UPI, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien is happy with the three East Bloc countries that have been chosen for NATO membership, but in addition to the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary, he wants Slovania and Romania to join the organization. Chretien says he would also have liked to see Slovakia as a NATO member
