USS Kamehameha deploys for six months by SUBPAC Public Affairs NAVY WIRE SERVICE (NWS) - 1 June 1999 - PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (NWS) -- USS Kamehameha (SSN 642), a Benjamin Franklin-class submarine based here departed May 28 for a six-month deployment. Kamehameha is capable of deploying Special Operations Forces and serves as a special purpose, multi-mission submarine. The boat has MK-48 torpedo capabilities and is capable of fulfilling a number of varied missions. Kamehameha was commissioned as the 30th ballistic missile submarine in December 1965 but was converted to a conventional submarine in July 1992. The boat has a complement of 150 men. She is named after Kamehameha the Great, the warrior and statesman who first united the Hawaiian Islands under a single ruler. -USN-
