GENERAL:

Three categories of ASET are being developed. ASET II is a desktop audiovisual trainer; ASET III is an in-flight training device; and ASET IV is a tactical threat emitting training device. ASET training device strategy uses the building block concept to train aviators on the proper employment of Aircraft Survivability Equipment (ASE). The ASET II desktop trainer teaches the fundamentals of ASE, threats and tactics at school and unit locations. ASET II replaced ASET I, the interim desktop trainer. The in-flight trainer, ASET III, teaches ASE employment while in-flight. The tactical threat trainer, ASET IV, teaches realistic force-on-force and collective team training under the "train as you fight" concept.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS::

ASET II, pictured on the preceding page, is designed as a highly interactive, video based trainer that uses the fielded system known as the AN/GSH-55(V)5 Electronic Information Delivery System (EIDS). The courseware is designed into three modes which are the tutorial, management and game modes. The courseware addresses all rotary wing aircraft platforms and Special Electronic Mission Aircraft platforms. ASET II courseware provides individually self-paced instruction based on the unique requirements of each platform. Training reports on student progress are available through the ASET II. A major software upgrade of ASET II is in process and will be released to the field in FY 96.

ASET III provides in-flight training to pilots. The pilot is trained to make the proper tactical responses to counter the threat(s) appearing on the radar detecting set/radar warning receiver indicator. For aircraft having integrated ASE displays, ASE/threat interactions are simulated through the use of embedded training software.

ASET IV, pictured on the following page, is currently in production and has been designated as the AN/TPQ-45, Electronic Warfare Training Set. ASET IV is an array of mobile threat simulators intended to create a realistic environment. The first ASET IV was fielded at the National Training Center in Oct 95. Subsequent fieldings will occur at the Combat Maneuver Training Center, the Joint Readiness Training Center, Ft Bragg, and Ft Campbell and Ft Hood during FY 96 through FY 98.
