The station is an airport for civil and military uses, with 11.5 hectares of land borrowed from the air force for commercial use. The main facilities include one S/N 9,098 foot long runway, one each taxiway on east and west, 40,248 m2 apron, capable of accommodating seven Boeing 737, 757, MD-82 and Fu-Keh 100.
Hualien Airport Office was completed in May 1962. At that time, it was a remodeling of Hualien Military Airport's gravel runway with additional building of waiting area, apron as well as facilitation of various guidance, communications equipment into a Class B Airport Office. The airport operates from 07:00 to 22:00. With enchanting natural scenarios, fresh air and abundance of tourism resources, Hualien attracts considerable tourists. The rapid growth of transportation volume has rendered the existing facilities insufficient. The CAA is undertaking expansion of the station's aviation building. The new building is expected to be completed by 2004.
