- ["Makarov was born in 1949 in the village of Glebovo, the Ryazan region. He graduated with gold medal from the Moscow higher military command academy, the Frunze Military Academy and the Military Academy of the General Staff. Makarov began his
service in 1971 in the Soviet Army Group in Germany. In 1979, he was commissioned to the Trans-Baikal
Military District. In 1993, he was appointed head of the headquarters of
the United Group of Russian troops in Tajikistan. Afterwards he occupied the post of the army
commander in the Volga Military District and was deputy commander of the
Baltic Fleet for ground and coastal forces. Since 1999, Makarov has been

20 May: Russian Defence Minister Sergey Ivanov issued orders to relieve the

STILL BURNING AT ARTILLERY AMMO STOCK IN SIBERIA (25.06.01 10:48:21) CHITA,
Southern Siberia, June 25 (AVN) - The fire which started from a lightning
discharge at the artillery ammo stock in the Siberian military district on June
22 is still burning, a spokesman for the district headquarters said on Monday.
There are still some embering fire spots at the site, the spokesman told the
Military News Agency. The fire destroyed a vehicle park, a barrack, a dining-room
and military unit's ammo stock. No casualties were registered. Due to being
close to the emergency site residents of the compound, Nagorny and Zarechnoye
villages, children and personnel of the Solnechny summer healthcare camp which
total number amounts at almost 2,700 people were evacuated (Agentstvo Voyennykh
