Commercial Analyst Workstation (CAWS)
In 1992, the Image Handling Standards and
Guidelines document for Commercial Analyst Workstation (CAWS) adopted the NITF 2.0 file format (only) as the format for full frame National imagery to be distributed from IDEX II, System III, and Low Cost Media.
In 1994 the National Photographic Interpretation Center (NPIC)/National
Exploitation Laboratory (NEL) conducted Commercial Analyst Workstation Evaluations. The exploitation functions categories evaluated included six image processing categories: image enhancement, image manipulation, simultaneous manipulation, stereo capabilities, image comparison, and image warping. The survey showed that:
- all core image processing functions for exploitation are widely implemented
- image processing for scientists and specialties are not provided in most commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) exploitation packages
- multi-spectral processing is not common on the COTS workstations evaluated
The survey concluded that:
interfaces were not needed for core image processing functions
- a few specialty services will exist
- required, domain-specific advanced services will be identified and addressed individually
