INTRO: A JURY IN VIRGINIA HAS FOUND MIR AMAL KASI GUILTY OF

KILLING TWO PEOPLE AND WOUNDING THREE OTHERS OUTSIDE C-I-A

HEADQUARTERS IN LANGLEY, VIRGINIA, FOUR YEARS AGO. AS V-O-A

CORRESPONDENT JIM MALONE REPORTS, THE JURY MUST NOW DECIDE

WHETHER CONVICTED MURDERER KASI SHOULD BE PUT TO DEATH.

TEXT: AFTER FOUR HOURS OF DELIBERATION, THE JURY IN FAIRFAX,

VIRGINIA, OUTSIDE WASHINGTON, FOUND MIR AMAL KASI GUILTY ON ALL

10 COUNTS IN CONNECTION WITH THE SHOOTING SPREE OUTSIDE C-I-A

HEADQUARTERS IN JANUARY 1993.

KASI WAS FOUND GUILTY ON ONE COUNT OF CAPITAL MURDER, ONE COUNT

OF FIRST-DEGREE MURDER AND THREE COUNTS OF MALICIOUS WOUNDING IN

AN ATTACK THAT KILLED TWO C-I-A EMPLOYEES AND WOUNDED THREE OTHER

PEOPLE.

DEFENSE ATTORNEYS RESTED THEIR CASE MONDAY WITHOUT CALLING A

SINGLE WITNESS. THE JURY WILL NOW BEGIN THE PENALTY PHASE OF THE

TRIAL AND WILL CONSIDER WHETHER KASI SHOULD BE PUT TO DEATH FOR

HIS CONVICTION ON THE CAPITAL MURDER CHARGE.

KASI'S ATTORNEYS SAY THEIR CLIENT IS SUFFERING FROM BRAIN DAMAGE

AND THEY MAY USE THAT ARGUMENT AS PART OF AN INSANITY DEFENSE IN

ORDER TO SAVE HIM FROM EXECUTION.

KASI FLED TO HIS NATIVE PAKISTAN SHORTLY AFTER THE 1993 ATTACK IN

WHICH HE WALKED BETWEEN A ROW OF CARS WAITING FOR A TRAFFIC LIGHT

OUTSIDE C-I-A HEADQUARTERS AND FIRED ROUND-AFTER-ROUND FROM AN

A-K-47 ASSAULT RIFLE.

KASI WAS ARRESTED BY F-B-I AGENTS IN PAKISTAN THIS PAST JUNE. ON

HIS WAY BACK TO THE UNITED STATES, HE ALLEGEDLY CONFESSED TO THE

SHOOTINGS, A STATEMENT HIS DEFENSE TEAM CHALLENGED IN COURT.

PROSECUTORS SAY HE CARRIED OUT THE ATTACK TO PROTEST U-S POLICES

AGAINST MUSLIMS IN THE MIDDLE EAST, INCLUDING THE BOMBING OF IRAQ

DURING THE GULF WAR. (SIGNED)
