INTRO: A GERMAN COURT HAS SENTENCED TWO BUSINESSMEN TO JAIL FOR

PROVIDING LIBYA WITH EQUIPMENT THAT COULD BE USED TO MAKE

CHEMICAL WEAPONS. V-O-A'S KYLE KING REPORTS FROM BONN.

TEXT: THE TWO GERMAN BUSINESSMEN HAD BEEN CHARGED WITH VIOLATING

WEAPONS EXPORT LAWS. BUT PROSECUTORS AGREED TO REDUCE THE

CHARGES AFTER THE TWO CONFESSED THEIR ROLE IN THE ILLEGAL

TRANSACTIONS.

THE MEN -- 55-YEAR-OLD DETLEV CRUSIUS AND 49-YEAR-OLD UDO

BUCZKOWSKI -- WERE CONVICTED OF VIOLATING GERMAN TRADE LAWS.

CRUSIUS WAS SENTENCED TO FOUR-YEARS AND THREE-MONTHS, AND

BUCZKOWSKI WAS SENTENCED TO THREE-AND-ONE-HALF YEARS.

AUTHORITIES SAY THE TWO SUPPLIED ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS TO LIBYA

FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF CHEMICAL WEAPONS BETWEEN 1990 AND 1993.

THE EQUIPMENT IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN SHIPPED TO LIBYA THROUGH

BELGIAN COMPANIES.

GERMAN AUTHORITIES HAVE BEEN TRYING TO PREVENT SUCH TRANSACTIONS

SINCE THE LATE 1980'S, WHEN GERMAN FIRMS WERE ACCUSED OF HELPING

LIBYA EQUIP A CHEMICAL WEAPONS FACTORY. (SIGNED)
