U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
June 17, 1997

STATEMENT BY NICHOLAS BURNS, SPOKESMAN

Secretary of State Albright applauds the capture and arrest of Mir
Aimal Kansi, a suspect in the 1993 attack against CIA employees in
Langley, Virginia, which was announced by the FBI and the CIA on June
17. Kansi's arrest is an important victory for U.S. efforts to combat
terrorism and a message to the world that terrorists have no place to
run and no place to hide. It should serve notice to other suspected
terrorist fugitives of the determination of the United States to bring
to justice those who attack Americans, however long it takes.

The arrest was accomplished because of the skill, dedication, and
teamwork of the many U.S. government officials who support the law
enforcement and counterterrorism goals of President Clinton's foreign
policy. We are particularly grateful for the perseverance and
professionalism of the men and women of the FBI and the CIA who
contributed to this effort.

Our hearts go out to the families of the victims of the cowardly crime
committed in Langley four long years ago. We hope this arrest will
give them some measure of peace.
