PREFACE
This document was prepared for the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), Architecture Office (AR). The USIGS Operational Architecture Description document describes the context (mission), activities, operational relationships, and information flows within USIGS and to and from its customers and suppliers. It is driven, in part, by NIMA's mission to support DoD's wartime missions, national level policy-making, and civil organizations and research. The document is modeled on the Department of Defense (DoD) Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) Architecture Framework document's (7 June 1996) "Command Relationships Chart," and as noted in the USIGS Architecture Framework-A (18 November 1997), identifies operational elements and their relationships, and depicts lines of command and coordination among the operational elements.The USIGS Operational Architecture Description (UOAD) document is being developed in two phases. The initial phase of UOAD development reflects operational activities centered around the NIMA Directorate of Operations. The follow-on phase will focus primarily on expanding the UOAD to reflect the full range of USIGS operational activities within the Imagery and Geospatial Community (IGC). The follow-on version will also address IGC comments against the initial version. The completion of the second phase will result in a comprehensive UOAD that will reflect USIGS related operations across the IGC. Maintenance activities will continue the process of updating the UOAD so it can continue as the comprehensive USIGS operational model to support IGC decisions regarding requirements, resources, plans, technology, and policy issues.
The USIGS Operational Architecture Description document will be maintained jointly by NIMA/DO and NIMA/CA/CF and will be reviewed annually.
