“Roman’s Runners” race for good cause
The 544th Intelligence Group, Peterson AFB, Colo., participated in this year’s Relay for Life, raising money for the American Cancer Society. The 544th formed a team and ran in honor of TSgt. Mike Widner and SSgt. James Grigalunas (two cancer survivors assigned to the 544th IG.)
The 544th IG relay team took the name ‘Roman’s Runners’ after their commander, Col. Greg Roman. Led by team captain SSgt. Rob Britt, Roman’s Runners ran, walked and crawled for 18 hours and more than 120 miles, helping the American Cancer Society raise more than $80,000. 544th IG personnel were essential to the event’s success. Team member SSgt. Ben Colmenar operated the grill feeding the entire field of more than 3,000 participants; an act which won him the 544th IG Most Valuable Person Award.
Also CMSgt. Steve Pullis, MSgt. Jimmy Richey, TSgt. Phil Hoard, and SSgts. Ben Colmenar, Rob Britt and Rob Douglas taught the U.S. Army team how to set up a GP Medium tent.
The 544th IG held several fundraisers including, a “pie in the face” contest, and bake sale that helped to raise more than $1,300.
The 18th Intelligence Squadron provided a significant portion of the $1,300 to help the cause.
