Maj. Gen. Michael Hayden, Air Intelligence Agency commander and director of the Joint Command and Control Warfare Center, will depart Kelly in September for Korea.

Hayden, who has commanded AIA since January 1996, will become the Deputy Chief of Staff for the United Nations Command and U.S. Forces Korea.

He will serve as a member of the UNC Military Armistice Commission interacting with UNC liaison groups from eight nations.

Hayden will be succeeded by Brig General James Miller who is currently the director of intelligence for the United States European Command, Stuttgart, Germany.

Miller returns to AIA after a five year absence. He was the assistant chief of staff for Plans for AIA's predecessor, the Air Force Intelligence Command, from June 1990 until June 1992.

Hayden said he thoroughly enjoyed his assignment "during a period where we've established our credentials as the pre-eminent Information Operations organization in the entire Defense Department.

"When the Air Force Chief of Staff identified Information Superiority as one of the Air Force's core competencies it was a tribute to the nearly 15,000 men and women who serve AIA at more than 100 locations worldwide."

"While I'm sorry to be leaving," he continued, "I'm happy to be turning over the reins to General Miller.

"With few exceptions, he's served nearly his entire career in AIA's predecessor organizations and knows the mission and people well. I'm confident he'll do a great job."

The general said he and his wife would also miss the many friends they've made in San Antonio.

"The people of San Antonio made us feel welcome immediately upon our arrival. Jeanine and I will miss San Antonio and hope that we can return to renew friendships."

Hayden is a 28-year Air Force veteran who entered active duty as a distinguished graduate of the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pa.

He has served in senior staff officer positions in the Pentagon; Headquarters United States European Command, Stuttgart, Germany; the National Security Council, Washington, D.C.; and the U.S. Embassy in the Peoples' Republic of Bulgaria.

His awards and decorations include two Defense Superior Service Medals, the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, three Meritorious Service Medals, Air Force Commendation Medal and the Air Force Achievement Medal.

Hayden is married to the former Jeanine Carrier of River Grove, Ill. They have three children, Margaret, Michael and Liam.
