Rift Valley Fever Outbreak in Saudi Arabia - Update

RIYADH: The death toll in Saudi Arabia from the outbreak of Rift Valley
fever, which surfaced in the Arabian peninsula last September, has risen to
119, the Health Ministry reported yesterday. In a statement carried by the
SPA news agency, the Ministry stated that "119 people had died of Rift
Valley fever up to Sun 14 Jan 2001, and 857 people in all have contracted
the disease, of whom 730 have left hospital after treatment."

[This outbreak appears to be contained. There have been only 2 more cases
and one death reported since Thu 11 Jan 2001, and the number of patients
discharged from hospital is unchanged. Unless there is a dramatic change
