There are a number of infectious encephalitic diseases, which affect the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord and meninges). Many of the diseases are zoonotic, and almost all are caused by arboviruses and are vectored.. Those carried by mosquitoes include the following forms of encephalitis: Japanese, Western Equine, Eastern Equine, St. Louis, Murray Valley, Ross River, Aura, Semliki Forest, Una, LaCrosse, California, Rocio, Jamestown Canyon and Snowshoe Hare. Those carried by ticks include the following forms of encephalitis: Russian Spring-Summer, Central European, Louping Ill and Powasan virus; and Venezuelan encephalomyelitis. Another, Maindrain, which appears in the U.S., is thought to be carried by a midge (sp. culicoides However, there is a form of equine encephalomyelitis that is caused by a toxoplasmic protozoan (parasite) and affects foals. Another, caprine arthritis and encephalitis (CAE) in goats, is caused by a virus tansmitted through milk and colostrum from lactating animals.

Many of the diseases are zoonotic. Most involve horses, though not all, e.g., CAE (above) in goats; Louping Ill in sheep, cattle, goats, dogs pigs, deer and ground birds; Eastern equine in poultry; Japanese in swine.
