Bluetongue Facts

Bluetongue, caused by an orbivirus and to varying effect depending upon the strain and sub-type, is an important disease of economic consequence. It is transmitted through the bites of midges, and perhaps ticks, to sheep, deer and cattle, and can be transmitted vertically to fetuses in infected animals. It causes lesions in the respiratory tract and in the vascular system, where it can lead to hemorrhage. Highest mortality rates are seen in white-tailed deer, pronghorn sheep and bighorn sheep. It does not affect humans.
